Thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate...? Yahoo

19/04/2008  Calcium carbonate decomposes to give CaO + CO2. You can see it crumbling, but it isn't really melting. This reaction comes to equilibrium, and the equilibrium pressure of CO2 increases at higher temperature, for much the same kind of reason that the vapour pressure of water increases at higher temperature.

05/12/2011  The decomposition reaction led of the formation of CaO. when you add water, it becomes Ca(OH)2. so of course it's going to be alkaline. It's calcium hydroxide. Why isn't it pH 14? well, calcium hydroxide isn't all that soluble. More coluble than magnesium hydroxide, but less soluble than strontium or barium hydroxide, which would give a pH of 14.
